Carolina Water Services Inc. of North Carolina (CWSNC) will be smoke testing the sanitary sewer lines in the Bay Tree Lakes community on October 16, 2025, between the hours of 8 am and 5 pm.
This testing involves blowing harmless smoke into the sewer system to locate damaged piping, improper connections, and other areas where unwanted water may be entering the sewer system. During this test, smoke may be seen coming from roof vents, building foundations, clean-outs, downspouts, sewer laterals, or manhole covers. The smoke will not enter your home or business if it is properly plumbed and vented and water traps contain water.
Recommendations for residents
If you have a sink or plumbing fixture that is seldom used, run some water in those areas the day before testing so the traps will be filled with water. Water can evaporate from unused plumbing fixtures and smoke could enter your building, more importantly, these fixtures could be allowing sewer gases to enter your building. It is recommended that water be added monthly in these unused fixtures to prevent sewer gases from entering your home.
Smoke is a non-toxic substance that is harmless to humans, animals, food, and material items. If the smoke does enter your home or building, it will clear within a few minutes with proper ventilation. Please contact a CWSNC representative at 800-525-7990 if any smoke enters your home or if you have any questions concerning the testing. Your presence is not required during the testing and all public safety authorities have been notified of this event. We would also ask you to mention this to your neighbors in case they did not receive this notice.
Thank you.
