Earth Day Action! Small Steps Make a Big Impact

Earth Day takes place on April 22nd of each year. This day serves as a reminder of our collective responsibility to care for the Earth and all its inhabitants. Now more than ever, it’s a time to take action to protect and preserve our planetary home for future generations.

Here are some practical tips to help you make a difference on Earth Day and beyond.

  1. Reduce Plastic Consumption: Plastic pollution severely threatens our oceans, wildlife, and ecosystems. For 2024, the official theme of Earth Day is “Planet vs. Plastics.” Click here to find out how to reduce your plastic consumption and waste. Choose to drink tap water instead of purchasing single-use plastic bottles whenever possible!
  2. Participate in E-billing: Reduce your personal paper waste, cut down on clutter, and save trees by signing up for paperless billing, especially your water/wastewater utility billing.
  3. Promote Biodiversity with a Pollinator Garden: Support your native ecosystem and create something beautiful, too. By planting native species, you provide essential habitat and food for butterflies, bees, and other pollinators crucial to biodiversity. Native plants also require less water and are drought resistant.
  4. Implement Energy-Efficient Practices at Home: We can all make a few changes in our routine to benefit the Earth. Start by sealing air and water leaks in your home to improve insulation and efficiency. Cutting back on flying, eating less meat, walking instead of driving, installing low-flow showerheads, and composting organic waste are other effective ways to conserve resources and minimize environmental impact.
  5. Flush Only the 3 P’s: In order to protect the sewers, public health, and the environment, we need to make sure all we flush is the 3 P’s- pee, poop, and paper (toilet paper)! Never flush any wipes – baby wipes, so-called flushable wipes, makeup remover wipes, and other wipes. They clog pipes and can make a mess.

Let's cherish the beauty of the Earth and commit to protecting it for generations to come. By implementing simple steps in our daily lives, we can collectively work towards a more sustainable future for our planet.
