CUII Investing $4.4 million in Upgrades

Community Utilities of Indiana is addressing critical water and wastewater investments to upgrade the local water and wastewater systems. Approximately $4.4 million of investment is underway including over 3,000 feet of water main installation.

Justin Kersey, President of Community Utilities of Indiana, said, “While much of the country’s water and wastewater systems often go unnoticed, they deliver life-sustaining and public health support every single day. These systems are aging and need continuous investment to avoid crisis situations like we’ve seen in communities where investment needs are ignored. At Community Utilities of Indiana, we work hard to upgrade our local systems so our customers can continue to trust the service we deliver now and in the future. Our customers support these important investments by paying their bill.”

According to Kersey, investments include replacing water mains, water services and water meters across the Indiana systems. This includes water main and service line replacements on Wallhaven Ct. and Walnut Hill Cir. and service line replacements along Hidden Valley Drive within the Twin Lakes system. Community Utilities of Indiana is also replacing mains and services along 78th Avenue and along Whitcomb St. in its Merrillville system.

Kersey stated, “As part of our Asset Management Program, we target annual replacement of mains and services in areas which have experienced an increase in water main breaks. We are happy to be underway with these projects, as we believe these replacements will improve service levels by helping to prevent future service interruptions.”

Rob Powelson, President and CEO of National Association of Water Companies (NAWC) said, “Communities nationwide are facing massive fiscal challenges to replace water and wastewater infrastructure and effectively manage their systems. Water-related services are extremely capital intensive – more so than electric, natural gas and telecom – which is why it is important water companies take a proactive investment strategy to ensure our country’s water future. We commend Community Utilities of Indiana for their continued focus on investment that goes a long way toward ensuring safety and reliability.”
