ANNUAL WATER TREATMENT PROCESS CHANGE

Carolina Water Service Inc. of North Carolina (CWSNC) normally uses a combination of
ammonia and chlorine, commonly referred to as chloramine, to disinfect its drinking water.
However, the N.C. Division of Water Resources recommends stopping the use of ammonia for at least 30 days each year to help maintain the highest quality of water. This change will occur on March 1, 2023 and continue through the month of March. On April 1, 2023, our operations team will return to adding ammonia as part of the disinfection process.

Additionally, we will increase flushing to refresh the distribution system which may discolor the water temporarily. If this occurs at your residence, allow the water to run for approximately 5 minutes, and this should resolve the issue.

Water customers should be aware that during this treatment change time period, traces of ammonia may still be in the water. Therefore, customers who pre-treat to remove chloramines prior to water being used, should continue to do so. This could be of particular concern for water used in kidney dialysis treatment, fish aquariums, and some commercial manufacturing.

If you have aquatic pets, you may want to consult your local pet store to ask how this may affect your pet’s habitat.

If you should have additional questions, please contact CWSNC customer service department at 1-800-525-7990.

Thank you,
Carolina Water Service Inc. of North Carolina
