What Not to Flush: Fats, Oils, Grease and More

This holiday season, please remember to keep your drains fat free! Fats, oils and grease can build up in pipes, causing costly, dangerous sewer blockages.

And remember, so-called "flushable" wipes never belong in the toilet! Wet wipes can do major damage to your plumbing. Always put wipes in the trash after use.

How to handle your cooking fat, oil and grease:

Cool It and Can It:
NEVER pour fat, oil or grease down drains, garbage disposals or into toilets! Instead, pour it into a can or disposable container, let cool, then discard in the trash.

Wipe Down Dishes: Use a paper napkin or paper towel to wipe oil residue from plates, pots, pans and utensils before washing them or putting them into the dishwasher. Then throw it away!

Trash Food Scraps: Use a sink strainer to catch food waste. After cleaning, put your scraps into the trash. Limit the use of your garbage disposal - grinding up FOG does not effectively prevent sewer backups.

Wondering what else *not* to flush? Hint: Your toilet is not a trash can!

- Prescription drugs
- Dangerous chemicals
- Cleaning products
- Pet waste
- Household garbage
- Plastics, latex, and rubber
- Other bathroom items
- Medical items

Many products and wipes are advertised as ‘flushable’ but they aren’t.
Wet wipes get trapped in the pipes, leading to costly repairs.

Help protect your water system and only flush the 3 P's: Pee, Poo and (Toilet) Paper!
