1. What is the recent announcement regarding Blue Granite Water Company? 

South Carolina Water Utilities (SCWU) has announced the consolidation with Blue Granite Water Company, marking the largest utility consolidation in South Carolina’s history. 

 

2. Will Blue Granite Water Company change its name? 

Yes, Blue Granite Water Company will be rebranded as South Carolina Water Utilities.

4. How will this consolidation affect me as a customer? 

The consolidation brings together over 70,000 customer connections across the Midlands, Piedmont, and Upstate under one utility. This will enhance service reliability and operational efficiency, ultimately improving your experience. 

We are updating our billing systems, and you may receive a bill with a shorter or longer billing cycle. Billing cycles will naturally level out to normal. 

 

 5. When is the effective date of the merger? 

The consolidation was approved by the South Carolina Public Service Commission and will take effect on July 1. 

 

6. What are the benefits of this merger? 

The integration aims to streamline operations, manage expenses effectively, and invest strategically in infrastructure improvements statewide. This is expected to enhance service quality and reliability. 

 

7. How has SCWU performed since managing Blue Granite's systems? 

Since SCWU began managing Blue Granite’s systems in 2024, we have successfully reduced costs, improved system reliability, and increased customer satisfaction. We have notably decreased boil water advisories by over 80%. 

 

 8. Will there be any changes to my water rates? 

No.  There are no rate changes; this is a consolidation of companies.  This consolidation is designed to provide long-term rate stability. Any proposed rate increases would go through a lengthy approval process by the South Carolina Public Service Commission, and you would be notified in advance. The consolidation is expected to lessen the impact of potential future rate increases. 

 

 9. How will customer service be affected by this consolidation? 

We anticipate that this merger will strengthen customer service and improve response times as we combine resources and enhance service quality.
